Lessons at the Automation Laboratory in Vicenza, Universit of Padova Electronics Engineering Diploma Course (October 1999 - January 2000, Prof. Ciscato)

  • Lesson One: "MATLAB: Differential equations of the 1.st order"
    • Using "solvers" Ode23, Ode45 (Ordinary Difference Equation) in 1.st order differential equations problems;
    • Examples of natural systems description using 1.st order differential equations;
    • Using "M-functions".

  • Lesson Two: "MATLAB: Differential equations of the 2.nd order"
    • Using "solver" Ode45 and examples;
    • Characterization of 2.nd order systems (natural frequency and damping factor).

  • Lesson Three: "Introducing SIMULINK"
    • Examples of dynamic systems models of the 1.st and 2.nd order;
    • Discrete systems. Discretization using Tustin and Euler methods: comparison of the results by frequency analysis;
    • Sample and Hold (S/H) in Simulink: sampling delay, definition of "phase-shifted samples";
    • Building IIR filters;
    • Variables saturation methods: anti-windup;
    • Effects of saturation in digital filtering.

  • Lesson Four: "SIMULINK: model of a DC motor"
    • Step response;
    • Locked rotor response;
    • Example of an oscillating response by introducing a 1/10 inertia;
    • Effects of "B" factor (friction) on speed;
    • Examples using "fdt" and "pole" functions.

  • Lesson Five: "SIMULINK: Bode and Nyquist Plots"
    • Bode and Nyquist plots of continuous systems;
    • Frequency analysis of a DC motor speed regulation system.




  • Experience One: "Presentation of the Laboratory"
    • The "Infineon C164 StarterKit" as a microcontroller development board;
    • The "Keil Software uVision2" C-language development environment;
    • Power-control board and DC Motor.

  • Experience Two: "Open-loop control of the DC Motor"
    • Using the CAPCOM6 unit as a PWM generator;
    • Generating a current reference using the PWM unit;
    • Open-loop behaviour of the DC motor; recording of voltage/current signals using the oscilloscope;
    • Experiences varying max torque and acceleration.

  • Experience Three: "P-type control of the DC Motor"
    • Developing a P-type controller using C language;
    • Using CAPCOM2 unit for reading the incremental encoder signal;
    • Using speed information feedback;
    • Stability of the system.

  • Experience Four: "PI-type control of the DC Motor"
    • Developing a PI-type controller using C language;
    • Anti-windup techniques;
    • System stability and calculation of the regulation parameters.

  • Experience Five: "Using the Analog to Digital converter"
    • Programming the A/D converter of Infineon C164;
    • Using the A/D converter to read armature (BEMF) feedback.
